Una compañía de ‘marketing’ había convertido en una práctica habitual la publicación de análisis y puntuaciones falsos en iTunes de los juegos y las aplicaciones de sus clientes. Ha sido descubierta gracias a las nuevas prácticas de la Federal Trade Commission (FTC) de los Estados Unidos.
Reverb Communications destinaba el tiempo de algunos de sus trabajadores a la publicación en el programa/tienda de descargas de Apple a la publicación de análisis de productos de sus clientes. Estos empleados debían entrar en el programa, puntuar positivamente los programas y concederles una buena nota.
La FTC descubrió esta práctica desleal y ahora la firma debe borrar todas las ‘reviews’ fraudulentas que ha publicado. El organismo ha enmarcado esta práctica dentro de la publicidad engañosa y se trata de la primera vez que tiene que tomar cartas en el asunto desde que cambió su línea de actuación en materia de artículos de opinión/recomendación.
En mayo de 2009, la FTC publicó sus primeros cambios en el seguimiento de este tipo de artículos en 30 años. La actualización fue necesaria para adaptar los estándares de publicidad a la era digital, ante la creciente proliferación de falsos análisis en la web.
La nueva línea de actuación de la FTC incluye bloggers, publicaciones online, programas como iTunes, afirmaciones de recomendaciones de personajes públicos e incluso reviews en Facebook y Twitter.
Precisamente hace un año, cuando las cosas comenzaban a cambiar en la FTC, la compañía ahora sancionada, Reverb Communications, era sospechosa de realizar este tipo de prácticas fraudulentas.
La directora de la división de prácticas publicitarias de la FTC, Mary Engle ha considerado que las compañías, “incluyendo las firmas de relaciones públicas envueltas en marketing online, necesitan acatar los duraderos principios de la verdad en la publicidad”.
“Los anunciantes no deberían hacerse pasar por consumidores normales y las compañías de promoción deberían dejarlo claro cuando tienen conexiones financieras con los vendedores”, ha apuntado Engle.
