Cambiar la configuración preinstalada por los operadores –un concepto conocido como ‘jailbreaking’– se ha convertido en un proceso muy popular en todo el mundo desde la irrupción en 2007 del iPhone.
La decisión de la oficina de derechos de autor de permitir exenciones a la Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), anulará la capacidad de los fabricantes de teléfonos de controlar la instalación de programas no permitidos por las compañías, en el caso de Apple, aquellos no incluidos en la AppStore.
La oficina de derechos de autor –forma parte de la Biblioteca del Congreso–, que puede definir excepciones a las leyes de ‘copyright’ existentes dijo en un comunicado que cualquier usuario podrá eludir las funcionalidades del teléfono y usar cualquier ‘software’ obtenido legalmente.
El fallo también permite a los usuarios cambiar de proveedor de servicios inalámbricos. En la actualidad, AT&T es el único proveedor de servicios inalámbricos de Apple en los EE.UU.
“Más de un millón de usuarios de iPhone hacen ‘jailbreak’ a sus teléfonos con el fin de cambiar de proveedor inalámbrico”, dijo la Electronic Frontier Foundation –que luchó por la exención– en una declaración separada.
