El importante sitio de Internet de videos gratis Hulu apostó por un modelo de suscripciones para ofrecer televisión, con un abono mensual que da a los usuarios acceso a las temporadas completas de series como ‘Glee’ o ‘The Office’. El presidente ejecutivo de Hulu, Jason Kilar, dijo el martes que el servicio tendrá un precio de 9,99 dólares por mes y estará disponible en los dispositivos iPhone, iPad y iTouch de Apple Inc.
También podrá usarse en los televisores Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, en los reproductores Blu-ray y, eventualmente, en la PlayStation 3 de Sony Corp.
El año próximo, dijo Hulu, el servicio estaría disponible en consolas como la Xbox 360 de Microsoft Corp y la Playstation 3 de Sony.
Los usuarios aún podrán ver los programas de televisión y las películas gratis en Hulu.com, dijo Kilar en un blog.
Pero agregó que el plan de suscripciones pondría a disponibilidad las temporadas completas de los programas de televisión, así como temporadas anteriores de éxitos como ‘Expediente X’.
“Creemos que una solución duradera que permita hallar y ver un programa de televisión dramáticamente más fácil tiene que funcionar para nuestros tres clientes, aquellos que son nuestros usuarios finales, nuestros avisadores y nuestros proveedores de contenido”, escribió Kilar.
Hulu -propiedad de los dueños de Fox, News Corp, los de NBC Universal, General Electric Co, el propietario de ABC, Walt Disney Co y Providence Equity Partners- generó un estimado de 100 millones de dólares en ingresos por publicidad el año pasado.
Pero como todas las empresas de medios, Hulu está tratando de equilibrar el contenido pago y el patrocinado por publicidad.
CBS Corp es la única gran cadena sin una participación en Hulu. La empresa declinó comentar sobre si participaría en el servicio pago.
