Hasta ahora Foxconn era una gran desconocida, a pesar de ser un eslabón fundamental en la cadena que lleva ‘gadgets’ como el iPhone desde la mesa de los ingenieros hasta el bolsillo de los usuarios. Ahora, una ola de suicidios ha puesto en alerta a toda la industria tecnológica, se barajan subidas de sueldo e incluso ha provocado la movilización de activistas e intervenciones de la policía.
‘Assembled in China’ es el mensaje que figura en cientos de ingenios de compañías como Apple, HP, Sony Ericsson, Nintendo o Nokia. Tres palabras que nos llevan a las fabricas chinas de Foxconn, una compañía taiwanesa que ensambla algunos de los productos tecnológicos más importantes del mundo, como el recientísimo iPad.
Foxconn cuenta con 20 fábricas en todo China que dan trabajo a cerca de 800.000 personas. Hasta el momento, diez trabajadores de su planta de Longhua se han quitado la vida desde que comenzó el año y otros tres lo han intentado, el último de ellos el pasado jueves 27 de mayo.
Todos los suicidios corresponden al mismo perfil, el de jóvenes trabajadores llegados de las zonas más pobres de China a las prósperas ciudades del este y el sur. Otras dos personas también resultaron gravamente heridas al saltar desde edificios con varios pisos de altura.
SUBIDA DE SUELDOS.
Foxconn prevé aumentar los salarios de sus trabajadores en China cerca de un 20% después de que el suicidio de varios de los trabajadores de su principal planta del Sur de país pusiera en duda las condiciones de trabajo en sus fábricas.
“El aumento será diferente en función de la localización, pero será de media en torno a un 20%”, afirmó el vicepresidente y portavoz de Hon Hai Precision Industry, empresa matriz del grupo, Edmund Ding.
La compañía y la policía local afirmaron que detrás de cada suicidio había razones personales, pero los abogados laboralistas afirman que las constantes presiones y el aislamiento social han aumentado el riesgo de suicido entre los trabajadores.
Por su parte, representantes de los trabajadores han instado a la compañía a que aumento los salarios al menos un 50%, lo que permitiría a sus empleados ganarse la vida sin tener que hacer horas extras.
Foxconn paga a sus trabajadores el salario mínimo en China, pero la mayoría de ellos ganan por lo menos el doble debido a las habituales horas extras que realizan. El salario base mensual de los trabajadores de producción de Foxconn asciende a 950 yuanes (112 euros), pero algunos empleados ganan hasta 2.000 yuanes (236 euros) al mes haciendo horas extras.
DE LAS EMPRESAS A LOS ACTIVISTAS.
La situación también preocupa a los gigantes tecnológicos que encargan a Foxconn el ensamblaje de sus productos, como Apple, Nokia, Hewlett Packard, Nintendo o Sony Ericsson. Todas estas compañías han decidido investigar la situación.
De hecho, según medios locales como el Zol, Apple habría decidido tomar cartas en el asunto rascándose su propio bolsillo. A pesar de que la de Cuppertino no lo ha confirmado oficialmente, este medio asegura que habría decidido destinar parte de sus beneficios para conceder primas a los empleados de Foxconn y evitar más suicidios.
La situación también ha hecho movilizarse a algunos activistas en China, lo que ha provocado incluso la intervención policial. Zhu Guanbing, de 36 años, obtuvo un empleo en la fábrica de Shenzhen con el objetivo de investigar los métodos de trabajo de Foxconn.
Según relata la publicación china Global Times, Guaning se encontraba en su hotel de Guangzhou cuando la policía irrumpió en su habitación y le detuvo por alterar el orden público. Según este medio, los agentes le confiscaron su ordenador y le hicieron firmar un compromiso de no hacer pública información relativa a Foxconn.
Guaning declaró que no cree que él y sus compañeros continúen con su trabajo, ahora que “alguien les ha echado un sermón”.
