El éxito de la AppStore también se puede ver en las cifras. En abril, y a nueve meses de haber sido lanzada, la tienda alcanzó los mil millones de aplicaciones descargadas.
En la tienda virtual, que sirve para todas las versiones de iPhone y los iPod Touch, se encuentran más de 50.000 aplicaciones diseñadas en su gran mayoría por desarrolladores externos e independientes, quienes se quedan con el 70% del dinero de la venta. Apple obtiene el 30% restante. Eso, si son pagadas, porque hay miles de aplicaciones para descargar gratuitamente.
El modelo ha sido tan exitoso que algunos atribuyen a la tienda las buenas ventas del iPhone, y que se ha convertido en un factor importante al momento que el usuario elige entre los tantos smartphones del mercado, claro, entre muchos otros.
Tanto así, que todas las grandes compañías empiezan a desarrollar sus propias tiendas online, y casi no se concibe un buen teléfono sin acceso a aplicaciones. BlackBerry, Palm, Nokia y la plataforma Android, han hecho su entrada a este mundo, algunos, con más éxito que otros.
